Charitable miles ≠ business miles

The charitable rate ($0.14/mile) is fixed by statute and is much lower than the IRS business rate. Claiming the business rate for charity driving is one of the most common mileage errors. What counts: miles driven in service of a qualified charity — delivering donations, volunteering at events, driving for a charity program. What doesn't: your commute, and driving to attend services.

Regular commuting never counts, and driving to attend services isn't deductible. The miles must be in service OF the charity — delivering meals, hauling donations, transporting people for a charity program.

A contemporaneous log: date, purpose, and miles for each trip. Reconstructing miles in April is exactly the kind of record that falls apart if questioned — log trips when they happen.
